After first funding his own way and by finding his own sponsers,in the early years, Jr went into the Busch (Nationwide)series in 1997, he said, "i wanted to make my father proud" he was always seeking his dads approval

He won the Busch(Nationwide) championship in 1988 and 89,running in a car owned by his father,with the number 8 made famous by his grandfather Ralf Earnhardt

In 2000 Jr moved to the premier Winston (Sprint)cup,he took his first win at Texas in only his 12th start,he also enjoyed the friendly rivalry with his father on the track,who always raced and pushed him hard,

Hoping to build on his rookie year,he felt his chances were good for the 2001 season But on the 18th February on the last lap,on turn four, watching his two cars racing for the lead, (Dale Jr finished second to Michael Waltrip) Dale Earnhardt lost his life, and the life of his youngest son and namesake changed forever.
