Davey Allison was born in 1961 the son of Bobby and Judy Allison. As a kid, Davey grew up in a busy racing family as his Dad and uncle, Donnie Allison, were building and racing stock cars all the time for a living. Davey spent much of his time helping around his Dad's race garage, mainly cleaning up and doing errands until he became a teenager when his Dad let him start working on his own car and racing on the local dirt tracks around Hueytown and Birmingham Alabama. By the mid 80's, Davey was racing full time in the ARCA and Busch series when he got his first Winston Cup start in Neil Bonnett's #12 Budweiser Chevy at Talladega in 1986. Bonnett was out due to injury and Davey got the start in the Junior Johnson prepared car and scored a solid Top 10 finish running with the leaders most of the day. His performance impressed Robert Yates who hired him the next year to replace Cale Yarborough and drive the Harry Ranier owned #28 Ford. Davey's rookie year in 1987 was excellent. He was Rookie of the Year and won twice at Talladega and Dover. He was the first NASCAR rookie to win more than one race in a season. More wins followed and Davey's best year came in 1991 when he scored five wins and won The Winston. In 1992, Davey won the Daytona 500 and just missed winning the Winston Cup Championship in the final race at Atlanta when he was involved in a late race wreck with Ernie Irvan. In 1993, Davey won his final race at Richmond in March. He died in August from head injuries he suffered when the helicopter he was piloting crashed during landing at Talladega Superspeedway. All in all, Davey won 19 Winston Cup races and The Winston in 1991 and 1992. He was a terrific driver, great Dad and husband and a good guy. I still miss him today.
