Great Friends Meet At Daytona!

February 25th, 2010

It starts off with a great friend Chevytech! He helped me get my house prepared by storing some boxes for me and brought me a box spring so I could get the house ready for the 3wide party. Next was an adventurous trip to the Orlando International Airport to pick up the Nutters. I finally found them on the 4th pass through at the Delta departures terminal (don’t ask).  I got a great big hug from Nutter and a firm handshake from Mr. Nutter. When I got them home they greeted Mrs. Fish like they had known her their whole lives. Chevy came over and we visited for a few hours,  then we let them get a good nights rest after their long travels.

Friday, after work, we did a little shopping then lunch at the Ocean Deck. While there, I got a surprising call from Moe. I rarely get cell phone service there. but it went through that time. She was stuck in VA far from the destination she had planned to make. Saturday, once again Chevy comes to the rescue.  He picked up Moe and got her to the track.

The Union Jack hat then came into play, since she had no way to recognize me at the track. The silly hat was just the trick! She got to watch the rest of the ARCA race with us and then the Shootout where we froze out butts off. Moe never sat down she was so excited to be at her first race.

Sunday morning we got up at 3:45 am and met Tech at the beach but the launch was scrubbed so we went to Denny’s for breakfast. Monday morning we got up at 4 am and watched the launch from my house was an awesome sight! Later that day, we went to Mr. and Mrs. Tech’s house for snacks and dinner and a lot of laughs. The Superbowl was spent back at my place and no, Nutter is still not a fan of American Football.

Monday I snuck out of work to be the camera man for my visitors Petty Driving Experience ride along where they had the ride of a lifetime. (pics on 3wide yahoo group).

Tuesday was a rest day since they had been going 165 mph for several days in a row and it was a rainy day.

Wednesday is my long day at work, so the guests had to fend for themselves. So, they fired up the GPS and drove across state to Tampa and delivered a few of those special Hugs to BubbaHughes. They spent the day chatting and having fun before driving back to Daytona.

Thursday they went to the duel 150’s and had a blast with the two exciting finishes.

Friday rain all day and the Truck race was delayed until Saturday after NW. I got the sign up on Nascar Smarts at the beginning of the show, but had to dash to make the start of the NW race.  I think the most fun was next. USMC and his USMC buddy met us at the track. All seats for the NW race were together. After the race a crazy dude approached me because we were both wearing FSU Seminole jackets. He offered up some apple moonshine that Mr. Nutter and I happily accepted. Also Crazy Rick and his family arrived, but had different seats than us.

The best time for me was after the race. Everyone in my living room at once! 6 members total (Me, Chevytech, USMC, Crazy Rick, Moe and Nutter) with family and more friends laughing and talking to other 3wide members on the phone.

Sunday of course was the biggest race of all, the 500, but I am leaving the race reports to my guests. Sunday night back at my place and USMC came over too. Re-watching parts of the races on DVR.

Monday back to work for me with the Nutters and Moe doing more shopping. I had an unexpected lunch with USMC then back to work. We took the Nutters and Moe to dinner at the Ocean Deck for dinner Monday night for our last meal together. Tuesday Morning was time for the goodbyes. I have to say I almost cried. I didn’t want them to leave because you never know when you will be able to get back together like this again.

3WideAlley Fantasy League Results – Fontana

February 23rd, 2010

Well, I guess I’m skipping a race summary this week, but obviously I was very pleased with how RCR and Kevin Harvick in particular performed. Congratulations to Jimmie Johnson – looks like he and Knaus are taking off right where they left off last year. I wasn’t ecstatic about Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s performance, but he’s had so much bad luck at Fontana I just wasn’t surprised. Hopefully things will go better for him next week.

Those darn RCR boys messed up my fantasy team hopes. I figured they’d get top ten’s, but I thought the win would come down to a battle between Kenseth, Jimmie and Kurt, and went with Kenseth on my team – Jimmie was just too much money. It all comes down to balancing the bucks in the Salary Cap game, so you have to go with who you can afford!

The stats for the game are not all that great this year. I cannot find a sheet where they list the weekly scores! I’m pretty disappointed about that, because it’s nice to recognize people who are back in the pack, but getting it back together for a surge to the front. If any of you get a score of over 800, email me and I’ll mention it in the story! Don’t be bashful, we all like hearing about 3WA members who did well!

So, what I’ll be doing is publishing the the top 20 of the league. The full rankings can be seen by logging into your team and clicking “League Standings” under the “Scoreboard” menu.

So here we go! Fish8bbait is the top 3WA member, tied in 6th place with my boy, Ronthedog! Fish and I share four out of six drivers, so I guess I’m doing something right. I don’t understand my boy’s methodology, but he’s kicking my arse, so he must just understand things I don’t see. In any case, congratulations to you two! Represent!  :hi5:

Following Fish and Ron is my girl Becca5. I’ve really been impressed with her choices, so I’m not surprised she did well. Following her in 9th is Moe55.  She knows her stuff, so she’ll be one to watch! Tied in 11th place is Lonestar and USMC88Fan – both have always been strong fantasy players.

Rounding out the top 20 are leftturns190 in 14th, and Peace6 in 18th.

This game goes half season, and things can change quickly. Even if you’re in 100th (Don’t worry Didi, I won’t tell anyone that it’s you), you still have PLENTY of time to win the whole game! So keep at it you all!

If I missed anyone, please let me know, and if you score over 800 points any week, be sure to email ASAP after the race so I can mention you in the Fantasy League story that week!

3 For All League

Wow! We have 250 people in our 3 For All League! Half must have joined in the last couple days before the game started, cause I didn’t even notice! Looks like FaerieLover, Fish8Bait and USMCFan are carrying our standard over there! I don’t know if I can keep up with doing reports for both leagues each week, but if one of you wants to volunteer to do a short write up about who in 3WA is doing well in that league, let me know!

On the board

CFH88 had some sage advice today, Rock Man style, that I’m sure we can all agree with. When dealing with a controversial subject on the board, “Make your frickin’ point and move on!” Now most of you already follow that policy, but some like myself need a reminder of it at times. I love debate, and I like to see vigorous debate on the board. But when it gets too heated, or too redundant and you’re just repeating yourself, let it go and move on. Again, I as much or more than anyone else on the board need to listen to that advice, especially lately, so I’m not trying to lecture you all. I won’t ever censure topics on the board, but we need to be considerate of the rest of the members when we’re hot about something. “Look before you leap” would be another good piece of advice. I could have avoided a big stink and offending someone who I’ve always liked and respected immensely if I’d taken a second look at what I had fired off in an irritated retort before I hit the “submit” button.

Have a great time with race chat in our NASCAR forum!

3WideAlley.com Fantasy League Results Week one!

February 18th, 2010

Congratulations to USMC88Fan for his great score of 839, giving him the lead in the 3WideAlley.com fantasy league! (Y) :usmc: :flag2:

Others with great scores in top 20 are Moe55, 3rd with 808; My boy ronthedog 4th, at 802. Fish8bait 11th with 754, my girl Becca5 15th, at 737,and  Birddog 16th at 730. Great job all of you! (Y)

If you want to get a feel for how you did. generally, anything over 600 is a decent score, 700 is good, and anything above 800 is great. But don’t despair if you didn’t get a great score. I came in 14th globally back in 2008 in this game, and had several 500 point weeks.

Very important: Remember to plan out your pics on scratch paper before making them on the computer or you’ll run out of trades! Be careful with your trades, because you can burn through them quickly if you’re not careful. Also, this game is only half season, not the full season I thought! So, if you don’t do well, you’ll get another shot after the last race of this game, the Firecracker at Daytona.

Anyway, we’re off the a pretty good start! I was happy with my team. I had two wreck out, but my other four were 1,2,3,4 several times over the night, and were up front even towards then end… then as things can do at Daytona, things changed! If only there wasn’t that last Green/White/Checker! But then Junior wouldn’t have got up to 2nd, so I guess it all worked out.  ;)

Good start you guys! Have a great time with race chat in our NASCAR forum!

Season Off To a Great start!

February 17th, 2010

Congratulations to Jamie McMurray and his fans for his win in the Daytona 500! He’s off to a great start back with his old team, Ganassi. Those RCR Chevy motors seem to be working for them! To say Jamie was emotional about his win, would be putting it lightly. ;)

Dale Junior and Kevin Harvick seem to have shaken the woes they suffered last season.. at least for this race. Harvick had the best car all night. If Carl Edwards didn’t make that move up the middle that messed up himself and the whole inside line, Kevin and Junior maybe could have had a 1-2 finish. Still, it was great seeing them run like they should! Junior’s run from 22nd to 2nd during the three Green/White/Checkers was ALL driver, and will hopefully quiet the catty comments from his teammates and others about how he needs to learn to drive. :-P

The finish sure made up for the red flag snoozefest over the potholes. Guess they ended up fixing it with 3M Bondo! All that rain and freeze took it’s toll, but I think NASCAR did a good job under the circumstances. Stuff happens, and the finish sure was worth the wait! I hope they don’t feel pressured to repave the track over this. A brand new track in the area had the same problem but even worse, so I don’t think this particular incident was directly related to the aging track surface. The racing at Daytona is so great with the bumpy, loose surface, I hope they don’t touch the track for as long as possible. It’s a drivers track now, I’d hate to see what happened to Dega happen here.

The new 3 attempts at a Green/White/Checker rule was pretty cool Though it cost Harvick the win, I really like it. They did that for a while in the Truck series a few years ago. They stopped doing it because the wrecks just got silly, but at least in Cup, I think it’s a great move!

Anyway, I think the season is off to a great start. Fontana was a little better last year than previous years, so hopefully we’ll have a good race there! I’ll do a Fantasy League update in the next day or two.. I’m behind schedule so far this week. USMC did great and is leading our league. In the meantime, you can all check at the SN site for the league standings.

Jamie McMurray Wins the 2010 Daytona 500!

February 15th, 2010

Well, it must’ve been a good race, cause I already have a hangover from excessive post race celebrations! Nice having kids old enough to baby sit the baby for a few hours while I’m down the hall. However, I’m not in the errr…. proper condition to do justice to a post race story, but I have to put something up, or I’ll be in trouble with Tech. :webster: :-O ;-)

I’ll be doing up the post race story later today, so this will have to suffice for now. It was really nice seeing some of those two ran so poorly last year come out and have strong performances – namely Junior and Harvick, but others such as Truex and of course McMurray made a mark too! What happened to Tony? That’s something I’ll have to look into more later.. when I can concentrate. ;)

Was real fun on 3WA during the race, and I know Fish, Moe, Nutter, Rick and USMC must’ve had a fantastic time at the track watching it all live! Wish I could have been there with them, but will have to live vicariously through them via their stories and pics!

Well, I’m off to sleep it off! Have a great President’s day and I hope you all got lucky on Valentines day! (L)

Not Just A Nutter Ride Along!

February 11th, 2010

The time was about 11am as Fish, Moe, Mr.  Nutter and I made our way to the infield of Daytona. The thought went through my mind that this is like lambs to the slaughter! LOL

Waiting in line, we registered and filled out our details on the computer. Then we removed our shoes to be fitted with the race suits, hoping they had size large. I settled back to await the experience of a life time!

When it was our turn to get in the car ” Oh NO! There was an 18 car  rolling down pit road!” I was going to let the guy behind me jump the line, but luckily it went to a guy doing the drive for six laps.

Our turn came and we handed over our cameras and sunglasses to Fish. Then the thought suddenly  crossed my mind “how do I get my butt throught an 18″ window?”.  However, with the experience of the track worker and manipulation I found myself sitting next to my driver Richard in the #20 Home Depot car.

The car fired up.  WOW!!! Slowly we rolled half way along pit road, waiting for Moes ride to catch up behind. Richard asked “are you ready?” I replied “YES! Floor it and take me as close to the wall as you want!” He hit the gas and we flew down pit road (no speed limit today).

Then we approached the track – I can’t put into words the feeling of exilleration as we roared around the 31 degree banking off turns one and two. In a blink of an eye we were on the back stretch within a foot of the wall. Turn three was approaching fast – 165 mph to be exact! My mind wandered back to the wall between three and four, to that tragic day in 2001. Then it was back to enjoying the ride.

Coming back onto the tri oval, I noticed the tire marks going every which way but the right direction. We were starting the second of three laps and again the excitement of seeing turn one from an angle off the front stretch. And no, I didnt have time to wave to Fish who was being the camera man for the day. Around we went for what seemed such a short time before my driver throttled down and we were back in pit lane.

Suddenly it was time to think how the heck do I get my butt out the car, but as the saying goes, “what fits in must come out” and my feet were soon back on the pit lane. But it didnt feel like i was touching the ground, i was was on a high! I looked at Fish gave him the big thumbs up and I still now cant wipe the smile of my face!

Kevin Harvick Wins The Bud Shootout 2nd Year In A Row!

February 7th, 2010

Congratulations to Kevin Harvick, his fans and RCR for his impressive performance last night winning the Budweiser Shootout. Carl Edwards dominated the first part of the race, leading all laps of the first segment. Edwards, Tony Stewart. Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne had the best cars, but Harvick snookered Biffle and Kahne into staying out on old tires with a couple feints before hitting pit road. Biffle ended up getting taken out after the green white checker by Jeff Gordon, taking Edwards and others with him.  Since the white flag had already flown, that froze the field with Harvick in the lead, Followed by Kahne in second, McMurray in 3rd.

Dale Junior’s woes at HMS continued with an ill handling car for most of the night. Perhaps seeing how the RCR cars ran tonight will make him wonder what it would be like to drive for the man his dad drove for. ;)~ But, it’s a long season, and his 500 car, different from his Shootout car, is starting on the front row, so perhaps things will work out better in the big race.

I just loved seeing a real live race! It’s been a while…. gets the blood moving! Took a while to get used to multi-tasking again – posting, watching the TV, watching TrackPass and dealing with my son who came in to watch the race with me – I missed some things, but I’ll be recording the replay tomorrow and fill in some of the blanks. Hope to be more dialed in for the 500!  (Y)

Had fun crowd today. Some were missing, but hopefully they’ll be here for the 500. See any of  ’em wandering around, tell them their missed!  Drop emails to your buddies! We had 1,600 comments today with several lucky members away at the race, but we can always squeeze more in! (Y)

ChevyTech: Daytona 500 qualifying is completely different

February 3rd, 2010

Sunday Before The Daytona 500 (Saturday this year because of Super Bowl)

First, the front row is locked in based on qualifying time trials that happen on the Sunday before the Daytona 500. Each driver gets two laps alone on the track to post their best speed. The top two drivers from that qualifying session are locked in and will start the Daytona 500 from the front row.

Thursday

On Thursday before the Daytona 500 the Gatorade Duels are lined up based on last weekend’s qualifying speeds. These two 150-mile races will set the final starting lineup for the Daytona 500. Drivers that qualified in odd-numbered spots run the first race to set the lineup for the odd-numbered (inside line) starting positions and those in the even-numbered spots run the second race to set the lineup for the even-numbered (outside line) starting spots.

Guaranteed Starters

Based on NASCAR rules the top 35 in car owner points from the previous season are guaranteed starting spots. Those drivers are only racing for their position on the starting grid, nothing more.

Rounding Out The Field

This leaves eight spots open to other drivers which are assigned like this: The top two drivers in each Gatorade Duel that are not already guaranteed a starting spot get into the Daytona 500. The next three spots go to the fastest three qualifiers based on the single-car time trials from Sunday. The final spot is guaranteed for a previous Sprint Cup Champion who was unable to qualify any other way. If there is no unqualified past champion then the 43rd spot goes to the next fastest qualifier based on speed from the single-car session.

It is a complex process but it is part of what makes the Daytona 500 such a special event.
