Maybe A Tweak, But Please, No Revamping Of Points System!

July 22nd, 2010

People often complain about NASCAR not listening to the fans, but sometimes they can listen to them too much. The talk of revamping the points system is a classic example of this. NASCAR is now bowing to all the whining about Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus winning too much, and is reportably considering revamping the points system. Revamping the points system to appease the whiners in an attempt to change the outcome of the Championship not only won’t work, it’ll make a joke out of the sport! In addition, when the same teams dominate the new points system, the very same whiners who demanded the changes will be the first to start whining that it’s all rigged again! Whiners are never happy!

Changing the points system takes a lot away from the historical value of being able to compare one era of drivers to another. There’s also a price to pay from moving away from tradition. So, NASCAR should think long and hard before making any changes to the Championship rules. While I was in favor of the Chase system, I appreciated that they tried to keep it as close to the traditional system as possible. They kept the points system the same for those in the Chase, and then doing a best out of ten races playoff. This mad it so consistency would still be the main factor, and not just that someone lucked out and did well for a couple races. I think with the current system, the best team wins the Championship. Any other result from a playoff system cheapens the sport!

There’s talk now that NASCAR is considering increasing the amount of drivers eligible for the Chase to 15, and then having an elimination system - eliminating a driver a week.

First off, why increase it to 15? The idea that the driver who is15th in points at the end of the regular season could then go on and win the Championship is a joke! Increasing it to 12 drivers was too much! If anything, they should be going back to 10! For a play off system to have legitimacy, the best team should end up being the winner, or at least a close runner up. Anything else would cheapen the validity of the sport.

Regarding an elimination system: We already have one! If you don’t run well in the Chase races, you’re out of the Championship! It’s that simple! We don’t need some arbitrary system where potentially the best team, who might’ve gone on to win the Championship, gets eliminated in the first round cause they had a parts failure or got involved in a wreck. Why play games? It’s just silly! Let the best team win! People can’t condemn Johnson/Knaus for winning, they should root for their drivers to step it up and earn the Championship themselves!

If they want to tweak things a little, how about changing up the tracks that are in the Chase? That’s a common sense improvement that shoulda been part of the original change to a Chase system. The current tracks certainly seem to favor HMS drivers in particular, and there’s nothing wrong at all with mixing around the order of the tracks from year to year. Champions should be good on ALL tracks on average, so it’d only be right to mix the tracks in the Chase.

Another common sense improvement would be to give the winner of the regular season bonus points. Maybe even the Top 10 finishers of  the regular season should get bonus points. Seems only fair! Again, the Championship should go to the best team of the season, and the team that was the best in the first 26 races certainly should have something to show for it when they enter the Chase. Give the winer 60 points, 2nd place 50, and step it wown by 5 points to zero bonus points for the 10th place finisher. That’s assuming a ten man Chase field.

I hope this is all just talk and that they’ll come to their senses before they do something that diminishes the value of the Championship. Small tweaks to the system that adhere to the spirit and history of the sport are fine, but radical changes like an elimination system are just silly. We shouldn’t be trying to be like the NFL with our Championship - stock car racing is a much different animal that stick and ball sports. Any changes to the Chase should be done solely to keep our Championship as close to the tradition of the sport as possible. More points for the regular season Champion and mixing up the tracks run in the Chase certainly meet that standard.

Have a great time with race chat in our NASCAR forum!

Aw, well you guys hate him anyway, so minus Jr., you should be happy

I dont hate Mr. H just think he is not honest but he has a though cookie in JG and his Dad John and btwFor me priority #1 is and will always be JG i will always be a wonderboy fan no matter what

Well, it’s like he said, if he says he is planning on doing a thing, & something changes, then he’s labeled a liar — there are more people involved in the company than just Rick & more than just him making decisions — it’s not quite that linear. And that is not going to change for me — and neither will being Jimmie fan.

Yup but Mark is getting all that he deserves i dont wish bad karma on people as i know it will come back to me but he has done it himself and Rick is only looking after his interest and the best for HMS and Mark does not fit in there no mo’

Well, I was a MM fan for a long time, but when he got the Brett Favre Syndrome going on, got fed up. And it’s my opinion, too, that if he’s going to waffle then Rick needs what he needs to do to keep the teams going. He can’t just fill the seat & get sponsors on a moment’s notice. It would be like me going in tomorrow & saying I maybe or maybe won’t work full time the year after next & even though I know it will take 6 months to properly train someone, at least!, I don’t feel like giving you an answer right now. And then expecting to keep my job. Wouldn’t happen.

I didn’t see all that happened. So busy & dealing with Meeshka. Vet will be here tomorrow. She has tumors on her spine, on her neck, elbows (that are seeping really bad today) & they tend to not show on imaging & just grow overnight with rotties. Happens fast & nothing can be done about it. :( We’re just trying to keep her comfy & clean until tomorrow now.
